ABOUT US

Who are we?

Sport Council is a Varsity Athlete run council that works with the Athletic community, the surrounding community and various corporations and networks to create change and growth. Sport Council is run by student-athletes who play at the highest level of sport at a university level. While competing and practicing rigorously, managing academics, and juggling other events that life might bring, athletes who have a passion for community change gather once a month to discuss and organize various events and initiatives to put on for their fellow athletes and for external communities and organizations.

Our Varsity Sport Council has three main pillars: internal events, external events, and community outreach. Internal events refer to initiatives and events within the varsity Athlete community. External events are our events run in collaboration with partnering organizations. Finally, community outreach refers to our initiatives that take place within the surrounding community where Varsity athletes can give back to these communities.

Frankie St. Louis is a 5th year field hockey player who is studying Kinesiology and Health Science. She has been involved in Sport Council since her first year at York and joined the executive committee as community outreach representative in her second year. She is passionate about creating change and community involvement and believes that being a varsity athlete is much more than just playing your sport. This year she is looking forward to getting the athlete community reconnected after the pandemic and improving upon sport council’s community connections and initiatives.

Lauren Walter

Lauren Walter
Co-President

My name is Lauren Walter and I am a fifth year on the Women's Rugby team! I am currently studying Digital Media here at York. I have been involved with Sport Council for the past two years—first as a team representative for the women's rugby team and most recently, as an executive team member overseeing the community outreach initiatives. This year, I am so excited to be the Sport Council Co-Vice President! I will also once again be assisting with community outreach.

Sport Council has given me an overwhelming sense of pride in the York Lions; it is so enjoyable and rewarding to see our student athletes come together to be leaders, teachers, and allies in our community. This year, I am really looking forward to getting to (hopefully) begin to do some things in person again. I know that us Lions excel when we are together and after a year of being apart, I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve.

Olivia KimOlivia Kim
Co-President

Olivia is a 4th year on the women’s volleyball team studying human rights and equity. She was previously a team rep in 2020/2021, and this year she will be Vice President on the Sport Council. Olivia loves getting to know her community through sport council events and is looking forward to being part of the planning process this year.

Courtney Gardiner

Courtney Gardiner
Community Outreach

Hey lions! My name is Courtney Gardiner. I am a member of the women’s hockey team here at York. I am going into my fifth year studying Disaster and Emergency Management. I have been a sports council rep since my second year at York and this year I will be the executive member for community outreach. This position looks after initiatives you are probably familiar with including Adopt a Family, Halloween for Hunger, and the Shoreham Clinics. I have always loved giving back to the community in any form possible and this role will allow myself and the rest of the Lions community to continue to do that. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing everybody back on campus in the fall and seeing us all get back to playing the sports we love most!

Lexi HannahLexi Hannah
Internal Events

Lexi is going into her third year on the field hockey team as a specialized honours psychology student. She was a team representative on sport council in her first and second year but is taking on the role of internal events with a specific focus on social events this coming year! Lexi’s favourite thing about sport council and reason for continuously being involved is the connections and relationships she gets to build with other students. She is a social butterfly and cannot be more excited to provide athletes with some fun events this year after a long year of being apart!

James Garrish

James Garrish
Internal Events

I am on the football team, and I am in my fifth year of concurrent education! Last year I was also able to work with internal events but this year my focus will be on Lions 4 Lions. The part that I love most about sport council is how we all come from different sports and background yet we all have one common love for our sport which brings us together on a different level. Sport council allows us to bring athletes together so we can all help one another. This year I’m looking forward to finally seeing everyone again and being able to cheer on our York teams in person again!

Damian FigueiraDamian Figueira
External Events

Damian Figueira is a member of the Men’s Hockey Team, entering his third year in Kinesiology
and Health Sciences. This is Damian’s first year as a member of sport council. He is in the head
of external events. Damian is looking forward to joining the sport council team and is excited to
help fellow athletes have a positive experience in their time at York. Damian is looking forward
to getting back on the ice and competing with his teammates once again.

Avery is currently going into her 4th year on the basketball team, studying Kinesiology. She plans to pursue in becoming a chiropractor after achieving her degree. When she is not on the court you will find her in the garden or spending time with friends. Avery loves to be involved within the lion community and wants to continue to share with future lions the great experiences that come with being a part of the pride. She is so excited to get started as one of your new sport council executives and spice up everything social media.
