The York Lions are counting down the top 10 stories of the 2014-15 season! Stay tuned to yorkulions.ca over the next two weeks as we relive a tremendous year for our varsity programs. The No. 1 story will be unveiled on Friday, April 17.The Lions women's track and field team had a tremendous CIS championship to reach the podium by winning the bronze medal, their best result since 1996. What made the accomplishment more remarkable is that the Lions finished third with just 10 competitors at the national meet.
After a fifth-place finish at the OUA championships for the second year in a row, the Lions went into Windsor for the CIS meet with many chances to bring home hardware. After the three-day event, the Lions had won six medals and collected 73 points, nearly double the 38 from the previous year, when they finished in ninth place.
Among those six medals were five golds –
Brittany Crew swept the shot put and weight throw,
Khamica Bingham won the 60m in a CIS record time of 7.19 seconds,
Sheereen Harris took the 300m gold medal and the 4x200m relay team of Bingham, Harris,
Shania Payne and
Mikeisha Bobb finished first – and a silver by
Christy Ihumaegbo in the 300m. Overall, every member of the 10-woman team scored at least one point for the team total.
