Four games between the Nipissing Lakers and the York University Lions basketball teams will take place on York's Keele campus this weekend, with both the men's and women's Lions looking to register their first wins of the season.
Â
The slate of games comes after both teams opened their regular season in the nation's capital against the Ottawa Gee-Gees, each losing to the Ottawa teams who are both nationally ranked.
Â
However, after dropping their first contest 76-52, the women's basketball team held the Gee-Gees to a close 48-44 decision. York outscored the Gee-Gees 15-4 in the fourth quarter.
Â
The low-scoring game featured a double-double performance from
Lauren Golding, who registered 18 points and 14 rebounds, both team highs from either season-opening game. The Windsor, Ont., native also had a double-double to open the season on Nov. 5.
Â
Aside from Golding, other veterans also had a good offensive performance.
Cyanna King was the team leader in points in the Nov. 5 game against Ottawa, also adding nine rebounds in the second game of the back-to-back on Nov. 6.
Â
The men's basketball team had a similar fate in Ottawa, keeping the score close against the No. 3 ranked Gee-Gees on the first game of the back-to-back, only losing 80-76. Four Lions,
Somto Dimanochie,
Tyler Pryce,
Prince Kamunga and
Warsame Mohamed, all had over 10 points in the losing effort, showcasing the team's depth.
Â
For this coming weekend's series, the Nipissing Lakers come in with a 1-3 record on the men's side and a 0-4 record with their women's team. The men's team's win came in a thriller on Nov. 12, 98-97 in double overtime over the Rams. However, they then lost by 40 points to the very same Rams squad the next day.
Â
The women's team was swept by the Rams on that same weekend, with the most recent of those two losses being a 17-point decision. Both the Lions and Lakers will be seeking their first wins in the women's division.
Â
Friday's games will begin with the women's teams opening their home schedule at Tait McKenzie Centre. Opening tip is scheduled for 5pm on Friday, Nov. 19 and 2:30pm on Saturday, Nov. 20. The men's teams will wrap up the double headers at Tait – 8pm on Friday and 5pm on Saturday.
