York University Lions women's basketball player Kiara Leveridge and men's hockey player Jag Phangura have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 16.
Levierdge, a fifth-year guard from Scarborough, Ont., cemented herself as the most prolific scorer in program history this past weekend. While putting up 16 and 23 points, respectively, in two games, she climbed atop York women's basketball's all-time scoring and field goals made lists on Saturday at TMU. A layup as part of a three-point play with 4:30 remaining in the second quarter earned Leveridge her 1,449th and 1,550th career points, passing Laura (MacCallum) Lennon (2004-09) for most all-time, a number that currently sits at 1,476. Additionally, the social work major passed Karen (Jackson) Northey for most career with 478 and counting, passing Northey's previous mark of 474.
Leveirdge and the Lions will get set for their second northern road swing of the season as they head to Nipissing and Laurentian this weekend beginning Friday in North Bay.
Phangura, a rookie forward from Burnaby, B.C., had the best game of his brief OUA career on Saturday night against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The former Surrey Eagle (of the BCHL), put up a goal and two assists in York's wild 7-6 shootout win over the Hawks, helping earn the Lions their second win in the last three games. Just 1:31 after the visitors had tied it at three, Phangura found himself alone in front and wired a shot past Laurier netminder Tristan Malboeuf to give his time the lead right back. The goal was sandwhiched around a first-period assist on a goal from Mason Svarich that made it 3-1 Lions and a second-period helper on Ryder Ringor's first OUA goal that tied the game 5-5 with just over two minutes remaining in the middle frame.
Phangura and the Lions will wrap up their five-game homestand this weekend with a Saturday night game against Brock and their PRIDE Game on Sunday afternoon against TMU at 2:15 pm as part of OUA Hockey Pride Week.
