York University Lions men's soccer player Christian Zeppieri and women's wrestler Prabhleen Randhawa have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 9.
Zeppieri, a third-year accounting major from Maple, Ont., closed out his third season in a Lions uniform in style, helping lead his team to its first national championship in a decade. Zeppieri scored four goals in three games at the U SPORTS championships, including the decisive penalty in the 116th minute to hand the Lions their sixth national championship in program history. That goal – and the three others he scored – also cemented his status as U SPORTS championship MVP, making him the first Lion to win the award since Michael Cox in that 2015 tournament which York won on home soil.
The Lions star midfielder has now solidified his spot as one of the most impactful players in the long history of York men's soccer, which will look to repeat as national titlists next November in Victoria, B.C.
Randhawa, a third-year kinesiology & health science major from Bramtpon, Ont., picked up the Lions third medal of the young season with a bronze at the York Open this past weekend at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The 2025 OUA second team all-star won her quarter-final match by fall over Lakehead's Ayla Thurston to advance to the 65kg semis. She lost that match, but bounced back in the consolation semi-final against club wrestler Ella De Almeida and then took the bronze medal bout by technical fall, 10-0, over another club competitor, Devyyn Manning.
Randhawa and the Lions will head down to TMU to compete in the Pat Bolger Open on Sunday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
