York University Lions track and field athletes Brenique Whyte and Brandon Choumbe Yami have been named the final York athletes of the week for the 2025 calendar year. Both athletes were instrumental in York's opening meet of the season.

Whyte, a second-year biology student, owned the women's throwing competitions, earning top spot in both the shot put and weight throw events. The pride of Medeville, Jamaica won the shot put with a 12.49m throw, and took the weight throw crown with a 15.85m toss. Whyte set OUA standards in both disciplines, beating the shot put standard of 10.60m by nearly two full meters, and exceeding the weight throw standard of 13.00m by nearly three.

Meanwhile, Choumbe Yami, a second-year kinesiology and health science student, took home three podium finishes on the track. He finished third in the 60m dash with a time of 7.00 seconds, good enough to qualify for the OUA championships by better than three tenths. He then won the 300m sprint in 34.87 seconds, nearly two seconds better than the 36.70-sec OUA championship standard. He then was part of a quartert along with Ibrahim Moustafa, Samuel Princeau and Dami Igbakoye that won the men's 4x200m relay in 1:29.44, three-and-a-half seconds ahead of second-place Waterloo.

Whyte, Choumbe Yami and the rest of the Lions track and field team will head into the exam break on a high note, and get back at it Jan. 3 at the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet, hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues.
