MARCELLE JOINS ESTEEMED LIST SELECTED FOR FEMALE APPRENTICESHIP COACH PROGRAM

An integral female member of the York University Lions women's volleyball coaching staff was selected as a recipient of the 2021-22 U SPORTS Female Apprenticeship Coach Program on International Women's Day.

Shanice Marcelle joins 17 other recipients of the apprenticeship across Canada, and will continue building on her successful tenure with the Lions coaching staff with her fourth season beginning next fall.

Marcelle joined the Lions coaching staff in 2018 after a tremendous playing career in which she competed internationally for Canada in both volleyball and beach volleyball.  She most notably donned the red and white at the 2007 World Youth Beach Volleyball Championships and the 2010 World Junior Beach Volleyball Championships.

At the same time, she was playing the indoor game collegiately with the UBC Thunderbirds, winning five straight CIS championships (2009-13) as well as two CIS Player of the Year awards (2011, 2013). In 2011 she was named CIS championship MVP and in 2013 she won the CIS Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Marcelle joined the senior national team in 2011, where she has represented Canada at the FIVB World Championship. She graduated from UBC with a degree in kinesiology.

The U SPORTS Female Apprenticeship Coach Program originally launched in the 2019-20 season. It aims to increase the number of women in coaching positions across Canadian university athletics by pairing apprentice coaches with a head coach in one of the 11 U SPORTS-sanctioned women's sports. A total of 46 applications were received for the 2021-22 edition of the program, nearly double from the inaugural campaign.
