As announced Thursday by the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), York University men's basketball alum Drew Green was named co-owner of the league and the inaugural chair of the board of governors.
Green, who is the CEO of INDOCHINO, a Canadian menswear company, played for the York men's basketball program from 1993-94 through the 1995-96 season, when they were known as the York Yeomen. In 2022, Green gave back to his alma mater through the donation of the Drew Green Lions Award.
The award – first presented in 2022-23 – is given to a deserving member of the York men's or women's basketball program, with preference given to athletes from Green's hometown of Scarborough. Recipients of the award include Bilan Khadar (2022-23) and Travon Hamilton (2023-24).
Green developed his entrepreneurial acumen from a young age, building his first business while still competing with the Yeomen. He has two children with wife Andrea, 18-year-old Liam and 16-year-old Aidan, the elder of whom is an NCAA Division I basketball player at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.
"Anyone that has been paying attention knows the CEBL is a rapidly growing and vibrant brand with boundless potential that has made great strides in a very short period of time," Green said in a statement to the league. "It is truly a league built by Canadians, for Canadians, and this resonates with my family – the epitome of a basketball family in Canada. We are basketball players, the sport is near and dear to our hearts, and we are fans of the CEBL.The league has been a catapult for the growth of the sport in our country, and I can't wait to help lift basketball in Canada to new heights."
