It was another building block meet for the York University Lions wrestling team at their lone home meet of the year on Nov. 16.
The Lions had four athletes finish in the top five of their respective weight classes and scored 10.0 team points
The weekend was highlighted by Stephan Niron and Rav Chahal, who finished fourth in their respective weight classes, each winning a trifecta of matches.
Niron defeated Algoma's Clayton Johnson in the opening round of the 57kg competition by technical fall (12-2). He then did the same (10-0) against Humza Zaidi of Team Impact Wrestling Club in the quarter-finals. However, he lost to Treye Trotman of the Western Mustangs by tech fall (10-0) in the semi. However, he beat Johnson again in the consolation semi-final, this time by a 10-0 tech fall count, to advance to the bronze medal match. Niron was downed by Brandon McInroy by tech fall (10-0) in the bronze bout, but still earned three team points with his fourth-place finish.
Chahal, meanwhile, took down Aanu Osuande of the Western Mustangs by fall at the 1:04 mark of their opening round tussle in the 125kg category. He then bowed out to Richard Deschateletes of the Brock Wrestling Club by technical fall (12-2) in the semi-final. Chahal bounced back nicely, however, claiming a consolation semi-final win over the Guelph Gryhphons Anthony Fonte, advancing him to the bronze medal game. Osuande, though, was able to avenge his opening-round loss to Chahal, defeating him by fall 2:31 into the match to claim bronze. Chahal was able to add three more team points with the Lions second fourth place finish.
The Lions other top five finishes came on the women's side with Erica Liang rounding out the top five in the 62kg category and Kelly Nyugen doing likewise in the 68kg division.
The Lions will have their final meet of the fall term at the U of T Open this Saturday, Nov. 30.
