The York University Lions wrestling team boasts a pair of OUA all-stars one the women's side after a sixth-place finish at the conference championships last month.
Arely Torales, a second-year interdisciplinary social science major, and Prabhleen Randhawa, a second-year kinesiology & health science major, each earned OUA second team all-star spots after winning silver medals at the OUA championships in Sault Ste. Marie in February.
Torales, a native of Etobicoke, Ont., slotted second in the women's 56kg category. She earned victory in her opening match of the championship by fall just 24 seconds in. She improved to 2-0 by beating Ella Pilot of the Lakehead Thunderwolves by fall at the 2:01 mark in the second round, before winning over Senuki Dasanayaka by decision (11-6) to advance to the final. In the gold medal bout, she fell, by fall, to Kendall Dettloff of the Western Mustangs 1:37 into the match, settling for silver.
Randhawa, the pride of Brampton, Ont., was the 65kg runner-up. She also downed a Queen's wrestler – Clara Ryan – in the opening round by fall, 20 seconds in. In Round 2, she bested Ayla Thurston of the Lakehead by fall 3:49 into the bout, receiving a bye to the final. There, she battled Bronwyn McGregor of the Brock Badgers, bowing out by technical fall (10-0).
Randhawa takes home her first provincial medal, while Torales earns her second OUA silver, after finishing second in the 53kg weight class in 2022.
