The first competition of the winter term for the York University Lions saw the track and field team make the short trip down to Toronto for the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet, where jumpers Tristan Boateng and Abieyuwa Edison-Edebor came away with podium finishes, earning them the inaugural York athlete of the week award for 2026.
Boateng, a second-year civil engineering major, captured the gold medal in the men's long jump, with a leap of 2.08m. The pride of Ajax, Ont., finished nearly a tenth of a meter ahead of the second-place finisher, and achieved the exact distance needed to qualify him for the U SPORTS championships in March in Winnipeg, making it the second time in as many years he will compete in high jump on the national stage.
Edison-Edebor, a third-year cities, regions and planning student brought home a pair of bronze medals, placing third in both the women's long jump and 60m hurdle events. The Newmarket, Ont., native set a personal best and achieved the OUA standard in both disciplines, with a hop of 5.19m in the long jump, and running a 9.12 in the 60m hurdles. She will compete on home soil in the OUA championships in February in both events.
Boateng, Edison-Edebor and the rest of the Lions will travel to Windsor for the annual Can-Am Classic, which begins Friday in the border city.
