York University Lions women's basketball star Kiara Leveridge and track and field phenom Arwin Mathivathanan have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 11.
Leveridge, a fifth-year social work student, made the biggest shot of the Lions season – and perhaps of her storied career – when she nailed a go-ahead three with 10 seconds to go in Saturday's upset victory over the TMU Bold, handing their Toronto rivals their first loss of the season. That capped a 26-point night, including 12 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The Scarborough native also put up nine points in Friday night's win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Leveridge and the Lions, who are now 8-4 on the season, head East this weekend for a pair of games beginning Friday night at Ontario Tech, before they had to Kingston to battle another undefeated foe, the Queen's Gaels, on Saturday afternoon.
Mathivathanan, a third-year kinesiology and health science student, won a pair of gold medals and placed himself at the top of the national triple jump leaderboard this weekend in Windsor, while also setting a York triple jump record. Mathivathanan, who, like Leveridge, hails from Scarborough, took home triple jump gold with a leap of 15.51m, a personal best which breks his own record of 15.44m, set last season. He also won the long jump with a 7.16m jump, also a new personal best, which slots him sixth in the nation and sixth on the York all-time long jump list.
Mathivathanan and the Lions will travel to the nation's capital for the Ottawa Winter Classic, with throwers will head to London for the Don Wright Classic.
