LIONS WELCOME MCMASTER, WATERLOO TO OPEN 2025 HOME SCHEDULE

After a tie and a win in their opening weekend of games, the York University Lions field hockey team is back home

After a tie and a win in their opening weekend of games, the York University Lions field hockey team is back home for the first time since earning a silver medal last fall at the inaugural Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Invitational Championship.

The Lions will host the McMaster Marauders in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, and before hosting the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday. Both the Maruaders and Warriors come into play this weekend at 2-0. However, Waterloo has only played once after a Queen's was forced to forfeit its first four matches, while, as fate would have it, McMaster opened with forfeit victories over both Queen's and the Toronto Varsity Blues.

York was quiet offensively in their opener against a stingy Guelph Gryphons team, but were able to break out offensively in London on Sunday against the Western Mustangs. They were paced in that one by Kathryn Carlow, who scored twice in the Lions 6-0 win to bring her total to three on the year after scoring the Lions lone marker in their season-opening draw against Guelph.

The Lions showcased their hallmark – defence – quite efficiently on opening weekend, and will look to do so again against McMaster and Waterloo, who, despite being 2-0, have little to show given they've only played a single game between them. As head coach Zeeshan Minhas mentioned in the season preview, his team always takes pride in defence, more than any other element of the game. With a young goaltender tandem of Ella Ciezielski and Alyssa Kay between the pipes, the defensive structure becomes all the more important. It's been so far, so goo for the Lions, who will look to begin the home portion of their schedule in style as they look to improve on their OUA bronze and U SPORTS silver from a season ago.

Saturday's match with McMaster begins at 2:00 pm, while Sunday's game against Waterloo begins an hour earlier AT 1:00 pm. Admission to both games is free.
