York University Lions track and field thrower Jayda Quijuka and men's hockey player Harry Clark have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending January 25.
Quijuka, a third-year athlete from Caledon, Ont., took home a silver medal this past weekend at the Bill Clinger Classic at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. The Caledon, Ont., finished runner-up in the weight throw competition, setting a personal best with a toss of 15.54m, which eclipsed her previous best of 15.40m. The toss also ranks her seventh on York's all-time women's weight throw list.
Quijuka and the rest of the Lions are getting ready to host the York Open this weekend, beginning Friday at the Toronto Track & Field Centre.
Clark, a second-year centre from Timmins, Ont., scored both goals in the Lions 2-0 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves last Friday night. The former Timmins Rock (NOJHL) and current criminology major opened the scoring just 1:20 into the game, a goal which held up as the winner, and – until 28 seconds to play – the only goal, before he was awarded an empty netter after being hauled down on a breakaway to solidify the victory. The effort vaulted him into sole possession of the team lead in goals with 11, after he entered the game tied with the now-departed Owen Gilhula.
Clark and the Lions head out on the road for a pair of games this weekend beginning Friday night at Western, followed by a late afternoon matinee at Brock on Saturday.
