The York Lions Women's Soccer team will look to end the regular season on a high note as they are set to face the Wilfred Laurier University Golden Hawks this weekend on October 16th. The match against Laurier is set to be York's final match of the regular season and their last chance to gain more momentum heading into playoffs.
York has bounced back nicely following a tough loss to the undefeated Guelph Gryphons almost two weeks ago. Since then, the Lions have rallied off two straight, including wins versus the McMaster Marauders and the Brock Badgers to improve to 8-2-1 on the season.
Laurier finds themselves coming off a split weekend, winning the Battle of Waterloo vs the Warriors on October 8th. The Golden Hawks could not keep that momentum rolling as they would fall short 3-0 to the Western Mustangs just two days later and move to 4-3-3 on the season.
Both teams come into this match with similar splits on the offensive end. While York averages more shots (13.4) than Laurier (10.8), the Golden Hawks shooting percentage (23.1%) is amongst the best in the OUA as the Golden Hawks capitalize on their chances very effectively, leading to an average of 2.5 goals scored per game. For reference, the Lions' shooting percentage is around 15.6% leading to an average of 2.09 goals per game.
The defensive side of the ball is where the main difference between these two squads lies. York is one of the best defensive teams in the OUA, giving up just 0.45 goals per game on average. Laurier has not been as sound on the defensive side, giving up an average of 2.0 goals per contest.
Last time these two teams played earlier this season, it was a hard-fought contest that came down to the wire with both sides trading chances back and forth. York opened the scoring in the first half before receiving a red card in the second half and being brought down to ten players for the remainder of the game. Laurier would go on to tie the game shortly after the red card was given. The score would remain tied throughout the rest of the match and end in a 1-1 draw. Both teams will be looking to secure a win this time around and head into the OUA Playoffs on the right track.
