The York Lions University Lions women's soccer team will look to build some positive momentum before the playoffs and clinch a first-round bye on Friday night against the Brock Badgers in what will be their last home game of the regular season.
Given it will be the last regular season home game, York will also be celebrating Senior Night and honouring their graduating players. The players being honoured on senior night are
Erica Di Matteo,
Sabrina Fabiano,
Rumaysa Khan,
Amelia Joseph,
Emily Fasan,
Maria Perri, and
Samantha Banfield.
York is coming off a weekend in which they split their games with a win over the McMaster Marauders and a loss against the undefeated Guelph Gryphons. The Lions fought with the Gryphons all game but would be on the losing side of s second-half strike by the Gryphons and would fall 1-0. York would answer in their next match against McMaster, dominating play on their way to a 4-0 victory.
York now faces off against the Brock Badgers who are right on the heels of the Lions in the OUA West standings. York currently sits at 7-2-1 with 22 points, while the Badgers are sitting at 6-1-3 with 21 points, one point behind the Lions. A win for the Badgers would have them surpass the Lions in the standings with a tiebreaker in hand. A win for the Lions would put them out of reach of the Badgers and secure a first-round bye for the OUA Playoffs. Both teams play a fairly different style of game on the offensive side of the field. York tends to fire more shots altogether, while Brock does not shoot at nearly the same volume, with York averaging 13.4 shots per game to Brock's 8.9.
On defense, both teams have very similar numbers. Both teams have only allowed five goals on the season in 10 games so far. Both teams also have exactly 50 saves on the season. However, Brock has seven clean sheets to York's five as the main difference between the two sides. Friday's game figures to be a defensive battle between two of the best defensive teams in the OUA this season.
Last season when these two teams played, York got the better of Brock as the Lions won one and tied one in the 2025 season. Brock has not beaten the Lions outright since 2009.
The game is scheduled to kick-off at 6 PM EST on Friday, October 9
th. Tickets for Senior Night are available at yorkulions.ca/tickets. The game will also be available to stream on OUA.tv.
