The York Lions Men's Basketball faces another doubleheader this upcoming weekend. Last weekend, the Lions opened their season at home with games against the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Nipissing Lakers.

The Lions home opener against the Varsity Blues was a hard-fought contest with the Lions going into halftime up 39-34. Toronto would come storming back in the second half to take the lead and the game, spoiling the Lions home opener. York would get back on track the following night, as they hosted the Nipissing Lakers. York would win that game 82-73 and move to 1-1 on the season after the weekend.

The Lions will have another doubleheader this weekend, but this time they'll have to travel for it. Firstly, they'll travel down to Windsor to take on the Lancers. Windsor will be a motivated team coming into this one, as they lost their opening game to the Guelph Gryphons 102-81. When these two teams faced off last year, Windsor was able to get the better of York as they secured a 71-56 win. Surely the York players remember that game and will look to send a message when these two teams hit the court on Friday.

Next, York will travel to London Ontario to face the Western Mustangs. Western fared better against the Guelph Gryphons than the Lancers did, as they were able to beat Guelph 81-60.  Western also won the last matchup between these two squads, defeating York towards the end of last season. These two teams did play a pre-season exhibition against each other also, with York emerging victorious in that one although it does not count towards their 2026-27 record.

A win against Windsor would give the Lions a 2-1 start on the season for the first time since 2023-24. The 2023-24 season is also the last time the York Lions Men's Basketball team made the OUA Playoffs and could be a positive omen for the Lions should they secure the victory. Following that up with a win against the Mustangs would give the Lions their first 3-1 start in 20 years. Safe to say, the Lions have a chance to set themselves up for success with the weekend ahead of them.

Friday's game against Windsor is scheduled for 8 PM EST while Saturday's game against Western is scheduled also for 8 PM EST. Both games will be available to stream on OUA.tv for all those interested in cheering on the Lions this weekend.
