LIONS FINISH 10TH AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The York University Lions men's swimming team finished in 10th place at the OUA championships in Ottawa this past weekend, while the women ended up 11th.

The highlight of the meet came in the men's 50m backstroke, where Haseeb Tariq set a new school record with a time of 27.40 seconds in the B final, ultimately finishing in 12th place in the event for the highest individual mark by a Lion at the championships.

Tariq had a tremendous Day 3, as he first broke the record in the preliminaries with a time of 27.58 seconds, only to better it later that evening.

Tariq was one of two Lions to qualify for a B final in their respective events. Mathieu Young did it in two separate races, the 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke. He swam a 24.78-second race in the 50m freestyle final for a 16th-place finish, and was also 16th in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 31.35 seconds.

The men's squad also had three relay teams record top 10 finishes, in the 200m freestyle relay, the 400m medley relay and the 800m freestyle relay.

The women's team also had two relay quartets finish in the top 10, the 200m freestyle and 400m medley relay teams.
