One might say the last 96 hours for York University Lions men's swimmer Eric Ginzburg have gone, well, swimmingly.
The second-year fly and freestyle swimmer won four medals – all of them gold – at the OUA championships in St. Catharine's over the weekend, won the OUA male swimmer of the year award and has been named both a York and OUA athlete of the week. Now, as announced by the national office on Wednesday, the Toronto, Ont. native is the U SPORTS men's swimming athlete of the week for the period ending Feb. 18.
He began the weekend by surpassing his own OUA record in the 100m fly of 53.02 by winning this year's event in just 52.74 seconds. The next day, the kinesiology & health science major grabbed gold in the 50m fly, clocking in at 29.04 seconds, before taking top spot in the 50m freestyle race with a time of 22.43 seconds.
Finally, on the last day of competition, Ginzburg captured the 100m freestyle gold in a time of 49.30 seconds. In addition to his four golds, Ginzburg broke six Lions individual records and two team relay records he broke.
"It's great to see my hard work pay off and to help put York on the map," Ginzburg told Brock Badgers Sports Information Coordinator Theo Wan at the conclusion of the championships. "It's my second year competing at (the OUA championship). Last season, the results weren't exactly what I wanted, so to be able to get this award means a lot to me."
The 19-year-old will don the Lions swim cap at the upcoming U SPORTS championships, hosted by the McGill Redbirds, from March 7-9 in Pointe-Claire, Que.
