York University Lions men's swimmer Eric Ginzburg was prolific in the pool at this weekend's OUA championships in St. Catharine's, and has been recognized by the conference for his efforts.
Just hours after being named York male athlete of the week, the Toronto, Ont., native was named an OUA athlete of the week, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.Â
Ginzburg, a second-year fly and freestyle swimmer, won four gold medals at the championships. He began by setting an OUA record in the 100m fly, winning in 52.74 seconds, besting his previous benchmark set last year (53.02). Then, on day two, the kinesiology & health science major took home a pair of 50m golds, first the fly in 29.04 seconds, followed by the freestyle in 22.43 seconds.
On day three, Ginzburg captured the 100m freestyle gold in a time of 49.30 seconds. The four golds – along with six Lions individual records and two team relay records he broke – were enough to earn the 19-year-old the OUA male swimmer of the year award.
"It's great to see my hard work pay off and to help put York on the map," Ginzburg told Brock Badgers Sports Information Coordinator Theo Wan at the conclusion of the championships. "It's my second year competing at (the OUA championship). Last season, the results weren't exactly what I wanted, so to be able to get this award means a lot to me."
He will now prepare to represent York at the U SPORTS championships, hosted by the McGill Redbirds, from March 7-9 in Pointe-Claire, Que.
