The York University Lions women's rugby team won its second game of the season on Friday night in front of a home crowd, defeating the Trent Excalibur 17-7 at Alumni Field.
Â
The scoring started early for the Lions, as third-year full back
Chanelle Lindegaard made a breakaway in the seventh minute of the game gaining 20 yards in the process, leading to a try by
Rayann D'Aguiar putting the Lions up 5-0.
Â
Five minutes later,
Michela Stratton followed suit, piercing through the Trent line and getting tackled one yard short of goal. The possession made its way to rookie
Erin Preston who would score her first try for the Lions, putting them up 10-0.
Natasha Naismith would add another two points thanks to the conversion, making the score 12-0 heading into the second half.
Â
Coming out of the half-time huddle, the Excalibur would find themselves on the scoreboard early in the second frame. Trent's Caleigh McMillan made a strong run on the far-right side of the field in the 46
th minute, and her try would get the visitors closer to the lead. Maddy Honells conversion would make the score 12-7.
Â
But York would be quick to respond. Second-year prop
Bernice Ediagbonya would keep the Lions rolling, powering her way through the Excalibur defence, and sealing the game at 17-7.
Â
The game was unfortunately called early due to an injury on the field, with the time on the clock stopping at 72:10.
Â
With the win York stays undefeated boasting a 2-0 record, while the Excalibur fall to .500 with a 1-1 record.
Â
The Lions will now look to take their winning ways on the road as they face the Waterloo Warriors next Sunday at 1pm. They will follow that up with their final game of the regular season at home versus the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sept. 27 at Alumni Field at 7 pm.
