The York University Lions women's soccer team returns home on Friday night to host the Windsor Lancers at York Lions Stadium in the second and final match of the season between the two sides.
The Lions are coming off a weekend in which they split a pair of games. They took on the McMaster Marauders last Thursday in a hard-fought contest on Orientation Night. The Lions played a solid game, outshooting the Marauders in both halves and 15-10 overall. However the Marauders had the better chances as they had eight shots on target to the Lions four, and were able to put one past York goalkeeper Charlotte Phillips in the 38th minute, which would end up being the only goal in a 1-0 win for McMaster.
The Lions would bounce back on Sunday when they took on the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo. York got the party started early after being shut out in the previous game with a goal from reigning York women's athlete of the week Joanna Abdelmalak in the 15th minute. Waterloo would respond in the 27th minute off a goal from Sarah Stanesic but would be quickly answered by Mia Aguiar in the 31st minute to give York a 2-1 lead going into halftime. The Lions would keep the pressure on with Abdelmalak scoring her second of the game in the 74th minute to extend the lead to 3-1. The Lions would add two more, one in the 82nd minute from Jasmyn Clarke and another in the 83rd from Sienna Caesar to cap the scoring in a 5-1 York victory to move to 3-1 on the season and keep pace with the Laurier Golden Hawks atop the OUA West.
Windsor is coming off a doubleheader in which they Warriors and Brock Badgers. The Lancers also took it to the Warriors and, like the Lions, put five goals on the board on their way to a 5-0 win. The Lancers then went on to face the Badgers on Sunday in what would end up as a very competitive, evenly-matched showdown. Neither team would be able to put one past the other. resulting in a 0-0 draw. The shots were very close as well with Brock registering nine, three of which were on target, and Windsor posting seven, four of which were on target.
As mentioned, these two sides have met once already this year, in the season opener, in fact. York came out on top after a two-goal performance by Nia Fleming-Thompson and a seven-save clean sheet from Phillips. The Lions will look to make it 2-0 on the season against Windsor while the Lancers will look to tie up the season series at a win apiece.
