The York University Lions women's soccer team will look to keep their win streak going this weekend when they make the long trek North to Sault Ste. Marie for a doubleheader against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
York has won their last two games with the most recent one being a 2-1 win over the Windsor Lancers last Friday. Prior to that, they had taken down the Waterloo Warriors in a 5-1 win on Sept. 6, and, thus, own a two-game winning streak going into this weekend.
Conversely, the Thunderbirds find themselves with six losses in as many games and still looking for their first win of the season. However, the Thunderbirds struggles are not unique to just this season. The Thunderbirds have not won a game since the 2019-20 season with a 1-1 draw against the TMU Bold on Oct. 17, 2021 being the only non-defeat over that span.
The games themselves favour the Lions style more than the Thunderbirds. Despite having a 4-1 record compared to the Thunderbirds 0-6, the Lions average about 13.4 shots per game, good for 4th in the OUA. On the other hand, the Thunderbirds average roughly 2.4 shots per game, the lowest mark in the province. This, combined with the Lions strong defensive work, having allowed just three goals in their first five matches, gives the visiotrs a strong chance to expand their lead atop the OUA West, currently at two points over the Brock Badgers.
When these two teams faced each other last season, the story was similar, with York registering 20 shots with 13 on target, compared to Algoma's three shots with one on target. York would go on to win that game by a score of 4-0.
In fact, since 2014 when Algoma joined the OUA, they have yet to beat the Lions, with York winning all 17 previous matches. They will look to keep that streak and their dominance of this match-up going while the Thunderbirds will hope to make some history for their program this weekend.
Both games between the Lions and Thunderbirds begin at 1:00 p.m., and can be seen live, free of charge on OUA TV.
