From 1986-91 France Gareau won seven CIAU and nine OWIAA gold medals as a member of York's track and field team. She was also a five-time OWIAA all-star (1987-91), four-time CIAU all-Canadian (1987-90) and a member of York's CIAU championship teams in 1987-88 and 1989-90. York's female athlete of the year in 1987-88, Gareau established school records in the 60m and 300m events. She represented Canada at the Olympic Games, the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, Les Jeux de la Francophonie and the World University Games. Her greatest moment occurred at the 1984 Olympic Games where, as a 17-year-old, she ran the last leg of the Canadian women's 4 x 100m relay team that won the silver medal.
