A graduate of Queen's University and the State University of New York, Mary Lyons came to York after 12 years of teaching high school physical education and with a coaching background in volleyball, track and field, gymnastics and basketball. Through her exceptional efforts in initiating and developing the women's athletic program, recruiting a strong coaching staff and establishing an active and effective student governed Women's Athletic Council (WAC), York established one of the best reputations in women's university sport at both the provincial and national level. Lyons served as president of the OQWCIA and the OWIAA, and as a director of the CWIAU and the CIAU. She also coached the York women's volleyball team for seven years and was a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Volleyball Association. Lyons convened many Ontario interuniversity sports, served on numerous university committees and co-ordinated the physical education curriculum in York's Faculty of Education.
