A student at York from 1965 to 1969, he was the kingpin of the University’s swim team during those four years, a squad that captured three consecutive OIAA Championships. At the CIAU swimming finals in 1966-67, he finished first in the men’s 500-metre freestyle event and was selected to the CIAU all-Canadian team. In 1968-69, Young was a member of York’s rugby team in its first year of competition in the OUAA league.
