Neil Harvey helped establish York's swimming team as a national contender in the late 1970's. York's national ranking improved from nineteenth to fifth following Harvey's first year as he won two CIAU gold medals. In 1977-78 he was named York's Male Athlete of the Year after capturing four gold medals at the OUAA Championship as well as gold in the 200 metre backstroke and the 800 metre freestyle relay at the CIAU Championship. Harvey, who graduated with a BA in psychology in 1982, still holds York records in the 100m and 200m backstroke.
