In 1968, Murray Stroud received a BPhE from the University of Toronto, where he had been a standout for the Varsity Blues hockey team. After a year of teaching high school, he came to York to study law and joined the hockey Yeomen. During that 1969-70 season, he contributed significantly to the York team's 10-0 OIAA league record and OIAA championship title. He led the Yeomen and the league in scoring, notching 17 goals and 18 assists. The York team advanced to the CIAU championship, where it won two of three games and the consolation title. In 1970-71, Murray again led York in scoring en route to the team's second-place OIAA finish. His 17 goals and 19 assists placed him second among league scorers. Stroud was named York's male athlete of the year in 1969-70 and was selected CIAU all-Canadian in 1970-71.
